Teeth Whitening Routine || Oil Pulling
These products are my holy grail when it comes to whitening my teeth.
For the longest time I spent $80+ / month on whitening strips and other whitening products.
Although those products worked I noticed that they made my teeth sensitive to the point where it became very uncomfortable.
I started doing research on alternative ways to whiten my teeth and coconut oil was not only the one that seemed to be most consistent, but had so many other health benefits included.
Now I'm a bit of a skeptic, so I knew that I couldn't believe everything I read off the web.
So I spoke to a few of my coworkers that are into holistic medicine and oil pulling and they gave me a few tips and made me knowledgeable about oil pulling.
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling involves placing a tablespoon of virgin organic cold pressed oil (I use coconut oil) into your mouth and then swishing it around for up to 20 minutes, minimum 5 minutes (pulling it between your teeth), before spitting it out. Whatever you do, do not swallow the oil as you will ingest the toxins you are trying to wipe out. Afterwards it requires brushing your teeth and rinsing your mouth out. And you’re done! It really is that easy.
Why oil pulling?
With the mouth as the home to millions of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other toxins, the oil acts like a cleanser, pulling out the nasties before they get a chance to spread throughout the body.
This frees up the immune system, reduces stress, curtails internal inflammation and aids well-being.
What You'll Need:
First, you'll have to pick an oil.
(I use coconut oil just because it has strong antibacterial properties, but sesame or olive oil will work also)
- A tablespoon.
- A cup of water with sea salt to rinse out the coconut oil after swishing.
- On Guard dōTERRA oil (optional, BUT I use it because it also helps whiten teeth and it keeps my breath fresh)
My Routine:
(I do this when I wake up and before I go to bed)
1. I scoop a tablespoon of coconut oil and add a single drop of On Guard dōTERRA oil.
2. I put the oil in my mouth and let it melt as I swish it for about 10-20 minutes.
(Note: The texture might make you want to gag the first few times, just take deep breaths ALSO, be gentle here -- no need to be as aggressive as you are with mouthwash, as you will be doing it for about 20 minutes and don’t want to get a stiff jaw! The oil will almost double in size as it draws in saliva as well as the toxins. Be sure not to swallow as you will be taking these toxins into your body -- the complete opposite of what you are trying to do.)
3. Find something to kill time - I usually read or go on my phone.
4. After the time is up, make sure that you spit out the oil in a trash can. *Spitting it in the sink can cause it to get clogged.*
4. I rinse my mouth with a cup of water and sea salt and spit it out.
5. I brush and floss my teeth like I normally do.
It's that simple!
